Incentives to Tank?

Just a quick shout out to the Blizzard folks that may or may not read my blog.

As everyone knows by now when using the LFG tool for 5 mans, if you are a tank you get a chance at getting some extra loot for filling a role of need.

It sucks that it takes something like this to get more Tanks in the Q. Also, it seems that the newness of the perk has already worn off as I am back to 45 minute wait times as a DPS.

So why do we have the issue in the first place?

  1. It’s harder to lead. Tanks are expected to lead and few really want that responsibility with strangers.
  2. It’s less fun than DPS and healing. I would agree at the possibility it is less fun than DPS but no more so than healing and finding healers seems fine which takes us back to point 1.
  3. Having to change or tweak/Change specs constantly.

To fix #1, add a NPC guide that leads the instance. They mark and call for CC on the mobs that need it and give a packaged description of each boss. The NPC can be dismissed from the run by the tank and leader.

It’s hard to fix #2. They have constantly been working on making Tanking fun. I believe the only thing left they could do is add a kiting component to tanking somehow. Personally I have fun tanking. I would almost say it is just as engaging as DPS and the largest difference is #1, the responsibility. Yes, I know we already have some kiting… I meant more of a permanent mechanic that allows kiting in order to minimize damage when you have a healer or DPS that are inexperienced. CD’s are great for that “Oh Crap” moment but doesn’t allow the skill of the individual player to really shine in minimizing damage for the duration of combat.

#3. Give classes that can tank a 3rd Spec. I tell you right now I would tank a 5 man every night If I had a tanking spec. Right now I have a Feral DPS spec and a Balance DPS spec. Some people have a spec specifically for raiding encounters and have to change it a little to run 5 mans. My feral Spec is Hybrid and has tanking in mind because I tank adds on Nef and Mal. I have a boom spec specifically for Cho. I am not going to respec every few days I order to run 5 mans. I would rather watch TV and sit in the Q… and I consider myself a pet and mount collector… and I still won’t tank because it’s a hassle (see 1 and 3).

Solve #3 and I am willing to lead. Stop sucking the fun out of the game Blizzard and give us Hybrid classes another Spec already.


Heroic Hal Vid and short explination

Here is our video from our Heroic Hal kill. Note I am tanking Skull. I set X as my focus and when Skull is at about 10% of health remaining I taunt X off one of our tanks. I tank X until he dies and I then switch to kitty and DPS down the remaining Drake and then Hal. If I hear our main tanks having a problem I might even taunt earlier and blow a couple CD’s (Barkskin, SI).

You will not hear me talk in the video but you will hear some of my guild mates as mumble was giving me issues (mumble is hic version of vent running on a Ti99 somewhere in the south ;))

Hybrid Tanking Nef and Hal Heroic

Sorry I have not been posting much lately but I thought I would let people know that with a decent hybrid build and good gear it is entirely possible to become your 10 man’s 3rd tank when needed.

I have successful tanked Heroic Hal drakes to help get him down. I have also successfully tanked Nef’s adds in phase 1 and will continue to do so as we get practice jumping out of buggy lava (don’t ask).

This build is Kitty DPS minded first and Bear Tank second. I did not have to give up ANY Cat DPS talents which was my most important requirement.

The bear talents I have are enough to be successful in my role.

Beta Testing.

So ever since I hit 85 with Jacemora in the Beta I essentially stopped playing in Beta.

My plan now, with the little time before the Cataclysm release I plan on testing out just how Uber my premade can be in full Raid T11 gear. I have cut the gems (such weird requirements on the meta), enchanted my gear, and choose a bear feral spec.

My plan is to solo some content… Most likely some Black Temple trash, just to see how viable solo grinding the last little bit of rep I need will be. Also probably Utgarde Pinnacle as I still don’t have the Blue Drake. It is possible to solo Utgarde already for the drake drop, but I want to see how much easier it is at 85 with awesome gear.

Ok… so off to BT… Fly to Blasted Lands… go through portal… fly to Outpost…. fly to BT…

“You must be in a raid…”

Damn it.


Fly to SW Harbor… boat to Northrend… fly to Valgarde… fly to UK… set to Heroic and enter UP.

Run the gauntlet… kill guys… pick up harpoons… shoot down Skadi…. oh wait…

Ok, so what did I learn?

  1. This is Easy. I went from 130K+ health to about 100K. Fought him standing still, never moved. Used no cooldowns.
  2. Bears hit freaking hard.
  3. Droprate will have me doing this quite a bit.

Earth, Wind, & Fire

Thanks to the GM (Selmak) of my guild Dsylxeic (Well, not my guild but the guild to which I belong),  for standing in with his DK for our fallen Warrior (his motherboard was fried).

So just an FYI to everyone out there, EW&F is not terrible at all. With current ICC gear most likely the largest problem you will have is not killing bosses too quickly. The hardest part of the encounter is timing the death and that is about it.

We went with 3 tanks, Pally, DK, and Myself (Yes, I still bear it from time to time), 3 healers (Pally, Disc Priest, Tree), and 4 DPS.

We start on Fire Dude, Misdirect him to the hallway entrance to his wing, DPS him while moving him to Stone dude. When Fire dude hits about 30% we go in on Stone Dude. When both are at about 25% I run along with 2 DPS and 1 healer to Storm dude and tank him and all the adds in the middle. 2 things I have to do…

  1. Don’t stand in Fire.
  2. Pull spawned adds of my healer.

Basically the rest is just talking in vent and coordinating their demise.

After that we moved on to Hero LK, we are now making solid progress and finally saw phase 3? The room with all the spirits… well at least 1 person did… progress none the less.
