Heroic ToC… Ouchies.

Let me start by saying I did purchase 2 pieces of T9 yesterday and ran with it in Normal ToC (Full Clear, 1 Wipe).

Color me unimpressed by the 2T9 bonus. If anything it is about the same as 4T8… 8 Sec more SR VS 3 Sec more of Rake… did not see a noticable difference in DPS from the change. I will elaborate on this when I take a close look at a parse (Dang it Zab, I knew I was forgeting something when you were not there last night). Bottom line, looking at recount, moving from 4T8 to 2T8/2T9 is about a wash. It’s not like going to 2T9 is going to give you a sudden 500 more DPS. Not going to happen.

In my opinion, if you are rocking 4T8 and at least have 3 pieces of T8.5 don’t spend Emblems for the cheaper T9, it’s just not worth the 60 Emblems. Personally I should have went with the non Tier Duskstalker Shoulderpads to replace Treacherous Shoulderpads and stayed with 4T8 for now.

Let’s talk about Heroic ToC.

It is brutal.

On our first attempt it was plainly obvious that we don’t have the DPS to even get past the first boss. Keep in mind we have the DPS for XT hard so it isn’t horrible but Heroic ToC is in a completely different league. My guess is early success in Heroic will only be had for guilds that have been farming Hard Modes Ulduar both 10 man and 25.

I definately expect to see more Heroic ToC nerfs unless Blizzard shifted gears and really only wants the truely Elite to have success in there.

We had the first of the Northrend Beasts down to 60% when the worms came. Now maybe we had too much DPS on the Kolbolds but I think that is unlikely. We just didn’t have the guns to keep up with the Heroic Pace.

Yeah, I did some math last week and convinced myself that our 25s didn’t have the DPS. We know the health pool of XT’s heart, that it’s has a 2x incoming damage buff, and how long it’s up. We know the beasts’ health pools and how long the raid has before the next spawn. At one point the it seemed one needed about 80k raid wide DPS for XT’s heart and about 100k for Gormok, but one quickly gives up keeping up with Blizzard’s stealth changes.

I don’t think that’s necessarily true. The guild I’m in now hasn’t been farming hard mode Ulduar for particularly long, nor can they farm things in general (limited time and all that). Yet we were able to get Gormok down by his 12th impale on our kill (out of 14 possible). We did have significantly good DPS on this (including lucking out and having three ferals and two rogues) but I think it’s certainly possible without ridiculous gear. You may just have to stack some people.

If you’re only at 60% on Gormok before the worms, that’s definitely a problem. You have 150 seconds to do 15.3 million damage, or 102k DPS for the raid. With 16 people DPSing and ignoring the tanks contribution, that’s 6300 DPS per person on average. It’s close to a tank & spank though, and you can ignore snobolds on the melee for the most part. The real DPS check, IMO, is on the worms; they’re not a tank & spank, they have significant downtime, and they’re much harder to deal with than Gormok. I will say that so far, ToC is by far a DPS-limited raid. Tank gear should be good, healers need to be on the ball, but it will be won and lost by how awesome your DPS is. If your raid is DPS light and tank/healer heavy in terms of skill, they’ll probably have some problems early on. If you think Beasts is a DPS check, wait til you see Jaraxxus heroic. Yeesh.

Dsylxeic spent the last two nights wiping on these guys too… In the beginning we were having trouble downing Gormok before the worms came out as well. Lessons learned from night 1: We regemmed our tanks for Stam (as they were taking nasty 30-40k hits). Reduced our total healers from 7 to 6 while switching our healer comp to include 3 holy pallies (for a beacon for each tank + 3-5 bubble walls rock on those last couple of impales). Left the ranged dps on the boss full time and had only non-combo point meele switch to snowbolds *only* when they were on a healer (who walked over to the melee group so aoe would still be on the boss). AoE from melee targeting boss does not hit them, but the reverse is true — meele aoe targeting snowblod will put damage on the boss. Our raid dps ranged from 90k-113k on attempts where we successfully got Gormok down the worms engaged (higher end he was dead before gates opened, lower end our 3rd tank was picking up the non rooted worm as we quickly finished off Gormok). Logs are posted on Worldoflogs if your interested in the parses. By the end of the night we were reliably getting to the point we could get the second worm to 30-40% percent before Icehowl appeared — now we get to (re?-)learn raid awareness with the poisons.

Good luck with your attempts =D

    Kara
